Official release from Whistler Blackcomb:

The ARC’TERYX Deep Winter Photo Challenge, presented by GORE-TEX® is back celebrating its tenth year at Whistler Blackcomb on January 9, 2016. This year will see an all-star lineup of photographers featuring previous winners such as Ashley Barker, Zoya Lynch, Russell Dalby, wild card King of the Dolomites winner Guy Fattal, and more to be confirmed. The 2016 show will carry with it a first place purse of $10,000 in honor of the ten year anniversary.

“We are super excited to once again co-produce such an amazing event,” says Justin Sweeny, Marketing Event Supervisor from ARC’TERYX. “Deep Winter is a great opportunity to support and showcase the amazing photographic talent in the snowsports community at large, while at the same time exposing the world class terrain that Whistler Blackcomb has to offer. It’s a win win!”

For the first time ever, competitors in the Deep Winter Photo Challenge will be expected to shoot a portion of their slideshows from lift-accessed backcountry. The format change will increase the terrain from which photographers can draw their inspiration but the rest of the competition will remain largely the same. The photographers are all given the same 72 hour window to capture athletes in their natural mountain habitat of powder-filled bowls, glades, and après bars. Each photographer will create a montage of the best images from the three days and their slide shows will be shown in front of a live audience on Saturday, January 9 at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. The slideshows will be judged by a panel of industry professionals and the winner will be crowned “King/Queen of Storms.”

As soon as the judges have made their decision and announced the 2016 King/Queen of Storms, the Deep Winter Photo Challenge People’s Choice Award contest will go live at http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/deepwinter. All the photographers will have a Deep Winter image of their choosing posted to the site, allowing the public to vote for their favorite. The contest will be active for 72 hours following the Deep Winter event and the photographer with the most votes at the end of the three days will win a trip for two with Whistler Heli riding, and $1,000. Online voters will be entered for the chance win a prize package from event sponsors.

Tickets for the Deep Winter Photo Challenge are $25 and available starting December 3, for purchase at any Whistler Blackcomb Guest Relations location, online at http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/deepwinter or by calling 1-800-766-0449. Doors open at 7pm and the slideshows start at 8pm.

Once again the Deep Winter Photo Challenge has partnered with the Avalanche Canada Foundation to help raise funds and awareness.
