Rail jam’s have become stale in recent years. Most are predicable and just plain boring due to the fact that the set up, talent, or vibe simply sucks. In Tahoe last Saturday, Boreal’s 4th Annual Jibassic Pro revived the jib comp movement, organizing an event that included the best of the basics and a lotta extras. The gates opened at 12 p.m. to the sponsor village. Brands from Forum to Technine, Sessions and Fuel TV were there to promote its product and giveaway goodies. At 2 p.m. for just $5 those urging to get their on snow fix could do so in the public jib park. The place was packed but after six months without snow no one seemed to mind. The air was cool and crisp, there was snow on the ground (even if it was manmade), and it was beginning to feel like winter. As a gorgeous orange and pink sunset roamed in the west the lights were turned on to the freshly painted SNOWBOARD staircase as was the crowd who began gathering around the setup ready to see some action.

The handpicked invite only shredders took a few practice rounds feeling out the logistics. As practice was going down the tailgate party went into overdrive. Marc Frank Montoya and the Technine posse were bumping beats on the turntables from Marco’s “tour” bus in the parking lot. Homies Chris Bradshaw, Tommi Yliantilla and Eric Messier were up in the mix as was Cole Taylor himself. After a mini happy hour of sorts the jam was about to kick off.

Familiar faces mixed with some newbies showed off for the bystanders who “whoo”ed and “oww”ed relentlessly. Staking home turf Chas Guldemond, Johnny Lazzareschi, Travis Kennedy, Jake Devine, John Foy, and Nick Poohachoff made it appear that summer never existed. In fact the whole pack of riders seemed mighty comfortable that was until a few major bails made the bottom line crystal clear. TK, Johnny Lazz, and one of the only girls in the comp Jessie who took a stair slide to her back super hard; were among many whose bodies took a bruising. The wooden stairs and plexi glass on the setup didn’t help either as it dinged, bomped and wobbled echoing through the air when people crashed. Lil’ blondie Kirstin Seitz was the only other girl to battle the setup and also deserves some props. Thanks for represetin’ chicas!

TK came back pulling this maneuver off the metal pipe feature but ended up taking another slam to the back. He shook it off though.

As the jam sesh winded down it was super hard to tell who the winner would be. Half the crew was little known local shreds who definitely held their own and the other half were seasoned pros with ad deals, major contracts, and who have stood on podiums times before. In the end it was a trio of little namers who had fought relentlessly for the win. Smokin’ Snowboards rider Andrew Brewer out of Reno impressed the judges with his consistency, style, and plethora of tricks on all parts of the feature awarding him 2 G’s and Southwest gift cards. The judges were almost equally impressed with Brandon Cocard winning second and Forrest Bailey with third. From the jam packed action, jibtastic setup, and major level of stoke Boreal’s team deserves some major kudos for pulling off an awesome pre season event. Nice work friends.

If you’re in Tahoe this winter be sure to check out Boreal for a yabba dabba good time.
