August 3, 2013 – Los Angeles, Calif – Monster Energy congratulates Mikey Rencz on his gold medal in Real Snow Backcountry at X Games Los Angeles.
Real Snow Backcountry is where eight of the world’s most talented backcountry freestyle snowboarders submit 90-second video parts for a shot at X Games gold. Other snowboarders who submitted edits include Rencz’s Monster Energy teammate Frederik Kalbermatten and Travis Rice, Mark Carter, Mark Landvik, Jussi Oksanen, Andreas Wiig, and Pat Moore.

The all-video, all mountain freestyle snowboarding contest is judged by a panel of judges and industry experts who ultimately award the medals, but fans decide the Fan Favorite by voting.

Rencz, a 27-year old Canadian ripper who lives in Squamish / Whistler, B.C., is arguably one of the most versatile and stylish snowboarders out there, and has been in the game for many years scoring cover shots, coveted video parts in Wear it Well, TransWorld’s Get Real, 2010’s Cheers and Burton’s newest film, 13 to name a few. With a Canadian Rockies upbringing, Whistler’s backcountry in his backyard and being a protégé of the dominant Wildcats it isn’t a surprise where he is in his career today with his backcountry riding.

“I didn’t really treat the X Games part any differently than filming a regular part. I was just out there having fun shredding with a good crew in the mountains,” said Rencz.
