Mammoth Lakes, Calif. – Mammoth Mountain is proud to once again host the Sprint U.S. Grand Prix January 16-19, 2014. This year, the energy will be running high as contestants are vying for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Snowboarding Team. The Sprint Grand Prix series features both halfpipe and slopestyle events where U.S. athletes compete to secure enough points to represent the country in the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. The Olympic Snowboarding Team will be announced during the last stop in Mammoth following the contest on January 19.

“Mammoth Mountain is honored to host the final Grand Prix on the road to the Sochi winter Olympics. Our Unbound Park operations team is building an amazing halfpipe and slopesstyle venue for a world class event in partnership with USSA”, said Rusty Gregory, Chairman and CEO. “Nothing is more important or rewarding than supporting the dreams and aspirations of our young people. Being a witness to young competitors, including local Mammoth Mountain team riders, turning their dreams into reality by qualifying to become a member of the US Olympic Snowboard Team right here on Mammoth Mountain will be a memory for a lifetime for me, our community and kids around the country. Best in the world! Go USA!”

Heading to the competition are a number of Mammoth athletes including Kelly Clark, Greg Bretz and Brandon Davis. Bretz shocked the snowboard world in Breckenridge in December by taking down Shaun White and winning the Dew Tour for halfpipe, further solidifying his spot on the road to Sochi. Clark has proved herself in the past decade as a powerhouse in the pipe and is looking to earn her third Olympic medal this year in Sochi.

The halfpipe contest will showcase the growth of talent, variation of competition style and the progression of the sport with bigger tricks than ever before. The slopestyle course consists of a massive3-jump line with a variety of technical rail features similar to the Sochi course. Each competitor will be judged on a combination of technical difficulty and style.Mammoth Mountain will be vital to Olympic selection. While three of the five Olympic qualifiers will be in the books, there will still be spots to clinch. Athletes will be selected from a ranking system using their two best finishes over the five events, with up to three men and women qualifying from halfpipe and men’s slopestyle, and up to two from women’s slopestyle.

“Mammoth Mountain is an ideal finale to the Sprint U.S. Grand Prix and the Olympic selection,” saidGrand Prix Tour Director Eric Webster. “It’s one of the sport’s best venues and was also the site of the very first Olympic Snowboarding Team naming in 1998. With two events in both pipe and slope, there will be a lot on the line.”
