Jérôme Tanon’s Spirit: Moments that sum up a photographer’s love of snowboarding
“What is the heart of snowboarding? Is it the biggest jumps, or is it what riders do when nobody is watching? What about the hard times? How can we try to grasp those feelings?
“‘The Spirit’ is a body of work made while following the snowboard scene during the 2011/2012 winter. They were shot with a Nikon FE2 on Ilford 3200 film and pushed to 6400 ISO in a home-made developer. The negative was then cropped down to around 10×12 mm in the darkroom and enlarged on 30×40 cm Ilford baryta paper with a selenium toning for conservation.
“Two identical prints were handmade from each negative, which were then destroyed along with all of the test prints making the photographs as unique as drawings. Displayed here is a set of the original prints.”
