The backcountry is an enticing beast. ‘If you don’t know, don’t go’ is a sentiment often echoed through trams and lodges, but regrettably one that is not always obeyed and respected. There is no denying the increased interest in big mountain riding and out-of-bound descents in the last few years. Splitboarding and slackcountry popularity has soared, while the experience level and knowledge of snow and terrain among participants has declined, thus leading to painfully clear safety concerns. Resorts are often the front line for the experience as many resorts offer out-of-bounds terrain. Whistler Blackcomb in particular is addressing this concern as part of their new series The Big Picture in which they address different elements of concern relating to the future of snowboarding.

Watch the above video to see what Whistler is doing in response to the increased interest in the backcountry, and check back soon for a featured story on the risks of going out-of-bounds.
