With a really late (11am) start, we decided that we were headed for the Pfeifferhorn. Specifically the NW Couloir. It’s a 3 Star line in Andrew McLean’s “Chuting Gallery”, and for good reason. By the time we got the the top, some boot packers (who left a boot pack for the entire 4 mile skin trail) were just getting done summiting the peak. They told us they thought maybe 4 people had gone down the NW Couloir. We pushed for the top. Looking in the chute from the top is pretty spectacular. Standing about 50 feet about the line on a stout stack of rocks gives a good vantage point down the top half. Getting to the repel is a sketchy, steep choke, that had been slipped out to the icy bed surface ( by what turned out to be 7 people by the count of tracks at the bottom). Max guinea pigged the line for us (like most the gnarly lines), set up the rap, and called me in. Let me just say, I haven’t been that terrified on my board in a long time. Getting to that rappel anchor was a definately mental challenge (possibly do or die). Once there it was pretty straight forward. Don’t drop your board,, sketchy rappel,, rip to the bottom. -AG.
