SALT LAKE CITY, UT (Nov. 12, 2013)- Salt Lake City, UT based Mountain Sports International (MSI) has announced exciting additions to the 2014 Subaru Freeride Series (SFS) competition schedule. This year’s schedule will include adult snowboard competitions in addition to traditional adult freeride skiing events. Junior Freeride Tour competitions for athletes age 12-18 will also take place at Subaru Freeride Series stops. Competitions will be complemented with festival activities designed to educate spectators about the sport and culture of freeride.

The Series will take place at four amazing mountains including Crested Butte Mountain Resort, CO (Feb. 12-16), Squaw Valley, CA (Feb. 19-23), Telluride, CO (March 20-23) and Big Sky, MT (April 2-7). The Subaru Freeride Series final stop at Big Sky will host the top junior athletes from around the world for the second Junior Freeride World Championships by The North Face.

“We are thrilled to bring the entire freeride community together through the Subaru Freeride Series this season,” said SFS Event Director Bryan Barlow. “Inspired by the success demonstrated on the SWATCH Freeride World Tour by The North Face, these new additions will provide greater synergy between both freeride disciplines and enable a variety of ages and ability levels to learn from one another in a meaningful way.”

The Subaru Freeride Series is North America’s premier Freeride Word Qualifier (FWQ) series, providing athletes with opportunities to earn FWQ points. SFS Adult competition will include 2 and 4-star events. Junior Freeride Tour events provide athletes 2-star points with the exception of the Junior Freeride World Championships at Big Sky Resort, which will be a 3-star FWQ.

The Freeride World Qualifier point system, shown above, has been developed as part of the SWATCH Freeride World Tour by The North Face (FWT). All FWT events are 5-star events. FWQs range from 1 to 4-stars and enable athletes to earn a corresponding ratio of points based on their performance at competitions. Accumulated points immediately affect an athlete’s position on the ranking system with top athletes qualifying to participate on the 2014 FWT.

The Subaru Freeride Series is sponsored by Subaru, The North Face, Sierra Nevada, Clif Bar, and Backcountry.com. The Junior Freeride Tour is sponsored by Subaru, The North Face, Clif Bar and Backcountry.com.
