Along with HBO Max’s new confusing rebranding to MAX last month, they dropped a trailer for Shaun White’s new documentary that is now officially streaming and available to watch on the app. Shaun White: The Last Run is a four part series touching on his family upbringing in Carlsbad to his final Olympic run in Beijing last year. We are only two episodes in (each one is an hour long), so we don’t really have a big review for you, but overall it is a pretty entertaining series. He is obviously going to be the hero of the story so it hasn’t brought up much controversy besides being at odds with the old FRENDS crew (Danny Davis, Kevin Pearce, Scotty Lago, etc.) and the family power dynamic when it comes to everyone ordering burgers and Shaun wanting ribs. It also touches on his drive in the skateboarding world, cracking his skull doing doubles with Bob Burnquist, and crashing his first Lambo. Becoming a millionaire at 15 sure sounds tough, but I think it is a gamble we would all happily partake in.
Whether a fan of Shaun or not, it is hard to argue with his resume as one of the greatest snowboarders of all time. As far as the Olympics, he was pretty close to the Ricky Bobby’s “If you ain’t first, you’re last!” saying from Talladega Nights. Shaun either topped the podium at the Olympics or failed to make it on. Winning gold in 2006, 2010, and 2018 at 19, 23, and 31-years old respectively while coming in fourth place in 2014 at the age of 27 and 2022 at 35. While the 2014 year was a big let down for White, fourth place in 2022 was still pretty impressive considering the level of riding that went down, witnessing a record breaking air and two triple corks. Shaun also finished his career with 25+ X Games medals between Winter and Summer, and a handful of U.S. Open wins. He brought snowboarding to millions of homes around the world through products, events and marketing and the sport has yet to have someone fill his shoes on the mainstream fame level.
The trailer is above and we put together a few photos from the past two Olympics and Shaun’s last U.S. Open win below. Go sign up for MAX or pirate it from a friend to watch the whole documentary (or check back soon and we will give you a more detailed review once we get through the whole thing).
