*Warning, only do this to a board you don’t care about messing up cause I don’t want your mom emailing me all pissed about how you just screwed up you new ride.
As I sit here watching the snow fall waiting for the mountain to open and my broken wrist to heal up I figured I would give my old 2000 Custom a face lift. This is how the process went. First you need these tools:
(from left to right) Goof-Off and a rag (to get all the grime from those old stickers off), Contact Paper, X-acto knife, Masking Tape, Spray Paint in your preferred color (find something that adheres to plastics), Clear Spray Paint (the glossier the better), 3M Positionable Mounting Adhesive (PMA baby), Powerbook with Illustrator or other preferred Illustration software (optional). 1. First clean off all the stickers off your board with a razor blade and goof off. 2. Next lay the contact paper over your entire top sheet and make sure your edges are well covered. (I used a squeegee from the PMA to get all the bubbles out) 3. I created a drawing in Illustrator that was the same dimensions as my snowboard. Before printing it I set it up to tile the printouts. This part you could do by hand directly on the contact paper if you want.
4. Print out your design. 5. Tape together all of the printouts to form one large design the size of your snowboard. 6. Apply PMA to the back of the design. (you could also you spray adhesive or something similar. 7. Press design on to contact paper on the snowboard and squeegee it down. 8. Use an X-acto to carefully cut away the parts that you want to paint. (don’t cut so hard that you cut into your topsheet) 10. Make sure to cover up all your inserts with masking tape if they are showing, Unless you don’t ever want to use them again. 11. Apply a couple coats of colored spray paint lightly so it doesn’t drip. Let it dry for a day or so. 12. Apply a couple coats of clear coat spray paint to protect your new piece of work. 13. You should let the whole setup dry for about 7 days if possible to minimize chipping. That’s it. A Custom, Custom.
