Joe Mango & Jessica Rich win 2012 Aspen/Snowmass Open slopestyle
The 2012 Aspen/Snowmass Open went down this past weekend as 10 women and 37 men took to the famed X Games course for a chance at $5,000 and first place bragging rights. It would be a same day qualifier and final as Mother Nature would send high winds through Aspen all day Saturday pushing the entire event to Sunday.
It would be an early Sunday start as the field of riders put on quite the show to qualify for the final that afternoon. Both the men and the women would have to fight high winds sweeping up the course as they put down runs worthy of the X Games.
Jessica Rich would prove to be the lady of the day as she scored a solid 70.7 landing her on top of the podium. Heather Baroody's 65.8 would land her in second followed by Molly Wilson's 60 to round out the top three.
As the day progressed the winds started to subside and the blue bird day would turn out to be a perfect setting for the men to battle it out for the top podium spot. The course was hard and fast giving the men more speed to send it on this monstrous course.
It would be a fun one to watch as Joe Mango took home the $5,000 and a pair of Skullcandy headphones for his first place run. Littered with technical trickery Joe would dominate the top section of the course that lead him in to four huge tricks at the bottom of the course. On the second jump Joe would put down the trick of the day with a giant double back flip that oozed with style and put him on top with with a 82.8. Rounding out the podium would be Hunter Wood with a 77.2 and Blake Axelson in third with a 76.7.
Big props to all the competitors and everyone at Aspen for putting on yet another Aspen/Snowmass Open, a 4 Star TTR event, despite the high winds that made it one difficult event to pull off. Until next year!
