Editor Mike Basher made the trek from Buffalo down to Pittsburgh last Saturday to photograph Red Bull’s Heavy Metal event. In typical fashion, he showed up with two 4×5 large format cameras to take a bit of a different look at the situation.
Thanks to an incredible venue, a crowd that seemed like it was almost all in snowboarding gear, and a cast of riders who brought their A-game, the task of photographing the scene was beyond ideal.

The Heavy Metal tour’s next stop is the finals in Boston, Massachusetts on February 21st.
Enjoy this set of images, taken with his trusty 4×5 field camera, as well as a camera he hand-built, retrofitted with a fisheye lens, which creates a 360º circle with almost 180º field of view.
Photographed on Kodak color stock, and Ilford black and white film, with a Chamonix 4×5 field camera, outfitted with a Rodenstock Sinaron-N 210mm lens, Nikkor T-360mm, and a Speed Graphic custom outfitted with a Pentax SMC 35mm fisheye.
