Quick-entry binding technology has come a long way in recent years—a very long way! Gone are the days of sacrificing function and response simply to save a few seconds strapping in. Multiple technologies exist in this binding segment and Nidecker’s Supermatic is perhaps one of the most intriguing. In simplest terms, the Supermatic offers all the speed of a quick entry binding, with the comfort and familiarity of a traditional strap binding. The key factor is that you can use any traditional boot with the Supermatic. And if you’re like me, someone who’s stubborn and doesn’t want to have to adapt to new boot technologies, this system could be for you.
The basis for the Supermatic is step in and go. Prior to entry, the highback is slightly tilted back allowing space to slide your boot in. There is a pedal devise on your heel area and when you apply pressure, the highback folds up and locks you in. It’s a simple process and it feels natural.
So where can this be helpful? The first thing that comes to mind is on a powder day where every second counts getting off the chair. With the Supermatic, you can literally, “buckle in” as you get off the chair. No need to stop. No need to fuss with straps. Step through and b-line it straight for the pow.
The Supermatic is also great for those still new to snowboarding—adults and kids alike. Once again, there is no need to fiddle with the straps which can be difficult for kids and awkward for those still learning. Set up the straps to your comfort level right out of the box and you’re set! Of course you can do micro adjustments if needed, but essentially you set the straps to your liking and you’re done.
The Supermatic makes for an easy transition into the quick-entry world, because once you’re in, it feels exactly like what you’re used to riding. Add the ease of use into the equation, and the Supermatic is a winner.
