Salomon X Approach SJ BOA Boot
What do you do when you’ve got a bunch of different parts on a bunch of different boots, each of which work really well? Simple: You put all those parts into one boot, for everyone.
Enter the X Approach SJ BOA. I know we’re gonna need to decipher a few things here. First, BOA: This particular boot utilizes the BOA system for what it’s best at: micro-adjustment for that perfect snugness. Salomon has implemented BOA on its unique and effective STR8JKT (SJ) heel-retention system. The SJ paired with BOA allows for juuuuuust the right amount of heel hold. Personally, with this boot, I’ve found that I don’t require much, but it’s good to have. Because we’re all different.
Speaking of heel hold, the X Approach is a universal boot. If we’re going to get scientific here, women’s ankles generally are smaller than men’s, given the same foot size. That being said, sex-specific boots are tailored accordingly. With the STR8JKT, the ankle of the X Approach SJ BOA can be dialed in to any size for the perfect fit—and thus proper performance. Standard laces with cinching cleats at the ankle isolate the upper and lower zones of the boot, and Salomon’s heat-moldable Comfort liner is nice and cushy right out of the box.
Because of a partially articulated upper cuff, on snow the X Approach SJ BOA is a medium-flexing boot. You’ll notice it’s very liberal in its initial flexing while you’re standing upright, but as you get into the flex, the boot gradually feeds in support. This toe-to-heel softness at rest makes it a great choice for a jib and park boot, though, and it tweaks to the max.
