Eighth Annual Dirksen Derby

Continuing the tradition of Erik Hoffman’s photo essay of the Downtown Throwdown, Tyler Orton was at the Dirksen Derby with Mamiya C220 in hand and multiple rolls of film in his pocket for an unconventional style of event coverage. – Jens Heig, Online Editor

There was nothing short of high speed at this year’s Eighth Annual Dirksen Derby at Mt. Bachelor, Oregon. Guys such as Alex Yoder, Forest Bailey, Rip Zinger and local heroes Curtis Ciszek, Austin Smith, Jake Price, and JD Dennis were ripping down both courses but only one man will be the fastest. That man was Harry Kearney, from the depths of Mt. Baker, Washington. If you’re looking forward to winning those side bets, strategy is where it always comes down too. Memorizing the course, which turns to go higher or lower on, and this year, remembering where those ice patches are. With clear skies and cold temps, it made for great weather yet challenging and firm conditions.

Aside from the race itself, a kickoff party is hosted every year by the Beaulieu family the night after practice day. Including beer, live music, and a silent broken board art auction. All proceeds from the entire weekend go to help benefit Tyler Eklund, who was paralyzed after a fall at the USASA Nationals contest in 2007, as well as helping build awareness about spinal injuries. In the past eight years, over $100,000 has been raised the because of Josh Dirksen and his team.

Congratulations to all of the winners and for another successful year of turning on Mt. Bachelor. Let the winter begin.
