January 31, 2010—(VISTA, CA) — A huge congratulations goes out to DC snow team riders Halldor Helgason and Torstein Horgmo who dominated the Snowboard Big Air competition Saturday night taking gold and silver at the Winter X Games 14 in Aspen, Colorado.DC_Halldor_BigAir_02.jpg The night undoubtedly belonged to 19-year-old Halldor who scored the gold medal with two perfect 50-point runs. It’s the first medal for the X Games rookie, as well as the first ever X Games medal for his home country of Iceland. Halldor went into the finals with high energy after qualifying first in the eliminations and didn’t hold anything back in his first run, landing a frontside 1080 double cork that scored him a perfect 50. His third run of a backside double cork 1260 scored him another perfect score and the gold was just moments away. DC_Halldor_BigAir_05.jpg “I was really hyped, you just try your best and see what happens,” said Halldor. “It felt pretty good.” Halldor’s X Games gold medal win is just the latest honor in a wildly successful season for this young snowboarder. This past Friday he earned “Rookie of the Year” honors at the 11th Annual TransWorld SNOWboarding Riders’ Poll Awards. He was also recently awarded “Rookie of the Year” and “Jibber of the Year” by Snowboarder magazine. “It’s crazy, I didn’t expect to get the rookie awards,” said Halldor. “Thanks to all the people who voted for me.” DC_Tor_BigAir_02A.jpg DC_Halldor.jpg Nabbing the silver medal with a final score of 94 was pro snowboarder and DC snow teammate Torstein Horgmo. Known for his effortless style and powerful riding, the 22-year-old from Norway landed solid runs all night. Earning him the silver medal was a switch back 1260 and a cab 12 late cork. This is Torstein’s second X Games medal. He earned a gold medal in Big Air in 2008 and was runner up in Big Air last year. DC_Tor_BigAir_03A.jpg “It was a great night, all of my friends were there and everyone was really killing it, stepping up to new tricks,” said Torstein. “It seems like you get on the DC AM team and then you win Big Air at X Games. Congrats to Halldor.” DC_TorNhalldor.jpg Keep your eyes on Halldor and Torstein as they continue their season this upcoming weekend at the last stop of the Dew Tour in Stratton, VT.
