Meadow, Tara, Spencer O’brien, Erin & Kaius. X Games: Now, then and future?

Erin Comstock

Mom, wife, snowboarder, former Roxy rider, Runway Films standout.

Tell us about your family.
Nate and I have been married for three and a half years. We had our first child 2-2-14. His name is Kaius James Love. We live in Denver and it’s been a wild ride since becoming a mommy.

How has motherhood changed your life?
I had my last snowboard trip to AK. I flew strait to SLC to move my stuff to Denver and the last day in SLC I realized It was go time if we wanted to try to have a family. I jetted out to Denver and wam bam I got preggers. It has been crazy, fun, exhausting, life changing and worth it. I knew I’d need to be selfless but coming from a very selfish world it was a big reality check for me.

Has snowboarding influenced the way you raise your son?
Being in the industry as long as I was I think it’s helped me keep a kid side to me. So hopefully snowboarding has influenced me to stay active and light minded.

Will you teach Kaius to snowboard one day?
I think I want him to play tennis or golf! Yeah, of course I’ll take him up and teach him to ride but I won’t be pushing him to do it too seriously unless it’s his passion. But he’s already cruising on a skateboard hands-free.

Did you have to choose between being a mother & having a career in snowboarding?
No. I would have been trying to stay sponsored my whole life if I didn’t try to start a family. But the problem is, our industry has a short lifeline so I think I left at a perfect time. I filmed my last video part at 35 and my body was telling me it was time. I don’t think I’d want to be much older to have kids either. It’s very exhausting!

Do you have some words of wisdom that you can pass on to families looking to raise their kids in the mountains?
Hmm, I grew up in the mountains and not till I was older, much older, did I realize how awesome that is and was. Now that I’m living in the city I wish I was closer to the mountains. Well my advice is that you can have both if you live in SLC! Awesome mountains, close airport, inexpensive housing and the culture (I believe) is growing!
