High Cascade Adult Camp

As I was growing up, it was always a dream to go to snowboarding camp. The years kept going by and though I am a youth at heart, by the unfair standards of our society I can no longer call myself a kid. Thus, it seemed as though summer snowboard camp was something reserved for those with elastic bones and a insatiable hunger for chicken nuggets. But for those of you that are like me, there is still an opportunity to go away for snowboard camp. It exists in a small town in the shadow of Mt. Hood at High Cascade Snowboard Camp.

When I arrived in Government Camp amidst my fellow campers, I was blown away by the variety of people that came to Oregon for snowboarding in the summer. The ages spanned 23-years-old to 58-years-old, their homes ranged from Australia to New York City, and the stories varied equally as much after getting to know the people I would be sharing the next week with. I learned that Clay Bayless was there to spend time with his daughter. Greg Reck, a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, found snowboarding to improve his life after multiple tours of duty. And David Benson was a die-hard who was celebrating his ninth session as a High Cascade Adult Camper.

There is definitely a reason why David has been returning to Oregon for nearly a decade. Think of it as an all-inclusive adult vacation. As soon as you disembark from the camp shuttles, a red carpet is rolled out before you complete with steak dinners, small group coaching, the newest snowboarding products, and a group of adults that are there to rekindle that youthful fire that is burning, if only a flicker, inside each and every one of us. Then HCSC pours gasoline on it, bringing everyone to a state of youthful exuberance unlike anything I have ever seen.

Ten years ago the staff of High Cascade decided to take the concept of youth camp and tailor it for an experience fit for adults, complete with separate dinners, drunken kickball and no form of curfew—just remember you have to go snowboarding in the morning. But it’s more than a party. This program is designed for adults of all skill levels: from those who have never strapped in to the rider looking to dial in a backside rodeo. And what really matters is showing how that waxed piece of wood and fiberglass can create one of the most enriching, rewarding and positive lifestyles you can possibly have.

That’s the goal. Show people how fun snowboarding can be. And this achieves it. By the end of my stay, I realized how special it was to be part of this group of people. For even though each was returning to a different job, a different state or different country, everyone was parting with the shared experience of being a camper at High Cascade.

So even though I never went as a kid, this camp is proof that there is always a place to be young again.
