Day 1 of the Subaru Freeride Series (SFS) 4-star Freeride Qualifier (FWQ) event  wrapped in Crested Butte on Friday, with Jonathan Penfield and Tess Carney topping the rankings for the men’s and women’s snowboarding contests.

Riders are competing to qualify for the Swatch Freeride World Tour, taking on extreme lines first here in Crested Butte, CO, then in Snowbird, UT, and Telluride CO,  before the 4th and final stop of the series goes off in Big Sky, MT.

The first day of the Crested Butte stop brought riders out to Body Bag and Staircase, runs famous for their daunting technicality.

The top 10 male, and top 5 female riders will compete in SFS finals, taking place at Big Hour Glass Chute, a permanently closed area of the mountain that will be opened specifically to host the SFS finals.
