Tom Sims Retro World Championships: The Legends of Tahoe, Day One

Being a Tahoe Local for the past 14 years, I’m well aware of the significance of this place and the people that have made Tahoe and snowboarding special. Traveling as I do for my profession, I’m often out of town during the Tom Sims Retro World Championships aka the Legends of Tahoe event. Due to my knee caving in on me this year, I actually feel fortunate and made a point to get up to Soda Springs for the event. Upon pulling into the parking lot, I immediately noticed retro outfits, noses caked with Zinka and a glorious plethora of vintage snowboards. I met up with Binky and headed into the main lodge where Don Bostick was heading registration and literally everywhere you looked, you would see a living legend. Terry Kidwell on a bench suiting up, Palmer, Roach, Kimmel, Barfoot, Farmer, etc; a who’s who of why the current generation experiences snowboarding the way they do now. The sun was out and the race was under way in no time. For some reason, I was under the impression that the race would be mellow. I was surprised by the speed these vets were carrying through the course— it was impressive to say the least, and filled with shenanigans…especially by Palmer. All in all, I saw more style in those few hours than I have all season, and I got to cap it off with Eric Messier and Gray Thompson getting rad in the hand dug halfpipe. Those guys are doing it right and having the most fun…which made me have a lot of fun too. Can’t wait for day two!
