Last night, Volcom’s newest addition to the Veeco Productions library, Mr. Plant, premiered at the Summit Music Hall in Denver, Colorado and effectively rattled eardrums, blew minds and fired up a crowd of snowboarders that were already stoked to strap in again. I don’t want to say much about the movie because spoilers are the worst, but I will tell you that Jake Price has outdone himself even after seven years of Volcom filmmaking. This movie is raw snowboarding, the kind that makes you visualize your own frontside three as this phenomenal roster of snowboarders lights up the screen to a soundtrack only meant to be played loud as fuck. Aside from Pat absolutely dominating everything in his path, Jake Welch blew us away with a part worthy of some serious recognition.
On November 4th, 2014 Mr. Plant will be released on iTunes, Xbox, GooglePlay and Amazon and in my honest opinion, you should buy it. I will, not just to support a group of incredible snowboarders but because this film made me want to go snowboarding. That’s something special.
Before the premiere Susie and I caught up with Mr. Plant himself for a few questions about the tour, life and snowboarding. Enjoy.
Watch the trailer for Mr. Plant
Jens: When did the tour start?
Tour started October 1st in New Hampshire.
J: Where did you go after New Hampshire?
We did 10 days in Europe and that was a whirlwind. Then we flew home and got five days off. Now we’re at the tail end of the North American tour.
J: Was there anyplace in Europe that you have never been before?
Yeah a few places. Milan, Italy, we went to Chamonix, France and then Laax, Switzerland which was really cool. Those weren’t part of the tour but we just stopped and checked them out. We had a couple of days that we didn’t have premieres so it was pretty rad to do some tourist stuff, sightseeing. Then also to Stuttgart, which was the last premiere in Germany. That was a big one.
J: Do you have any good stories? Anything wild happen?
I mean plenty of wild stuff happened [laughs]. But we were pretty PG, we just had a lot of fun. A lot of beer.
Susie: Was it you and Jake Price the whole time?
Yeah it was Jake and I, Arthur Longo was there the whole time, the Volcom European Team Manager, Markus Keller, and Vernon Deck was there for most of it. It was fun.
J: What are you most stoked on about the movie?
I think the biggest complement that I’ve been getting from people is that they’re psyched. After they watch it they want to go snowboarding. So it’s definitely a no bullshit, action snowboard video and you can watch it before you go up to the hill and just get psyched to go ride. That’s the reason why we make them. Just to hear people say that they want to go shred afterwards, especially with the method montage at the end, everyone is all fired up after that happens.
S: Did you feel any pressure having to lead a movie?
Yeah, a lot of pressure. I saw it as my only opportunity to get to do something like this so there was a lot of pressure on myself. When you’re handed the reigns to do whatever you want it’s amazing but you have to steer the ship, you have to make the decisions and all the calls.
S: Did you have everyone in mind that you wanted to work with?
Yeah, we just had meetings all last summer talking about the plans of where we want to go, who we want to have in the video. It was pretty cool how it all came together at the end because we were planning the Baldface trip then out of the blue Terje was available, so he came with us. Just little things like that made the whole thing special.
S: How did the name transpire? Mr. Plant?
It was actually a note when I moved into my apartment in Venice. Travis Rice and his girlfriend Evan stayed with me and their housewarming give was this plant. They wrote me a note saying, “Water Mr. Plant or he’ll die.” Then when I had Mike Rav, Scott Blum, Hunter Wood, all those guys over after a stupid party night Mr. Plant just became my nickname. So that’s how it started. But from that it’s taken a lot of different meanings.
S: What are your three favorite snowboard movies of all time that have inspired you?
Three ones I really loved were True Life, Subjekt Haakonsen, and Destroyer. That’s off the top of my head [laughs].
J: In closing, Maui is the last stop of the tour. What’s going to happen in Maui?
I’m going to stay a week and detox [laughs]. It’s a tough time because all of the mountains are opening up right then, but I’m all the way out in Hawaii so I might as well enjoy it.
J: Do you have any plans for preseason?
I’ll be in Salt Lake City and just see where it snows. Either in Salt Lake or here in Colorado. I usually come out here for preseason and just ride the park at Keystone.
