A new Yearning for Turning for us all to enjoy as winter kicks off in the Northern Hemisphere.
Words by Matt Foley:
The plan for Australia was loose, but in an intentional way. Our only real goal was to camp out of the van for a few weeks, ride some of Korua’s more obscure shapes, and explore the connection to the surf world and their approach to board building. Nico and I have done our fair share of traveling together on trips and we’ve learned to appreciate and lean into the idea of things being open ended. Having the van was the key to this, allowing flexibility of where we wanted to go, chasing snow and waves as the conditions revealed themselves. We also wanted to give ourselves the opportunity to really connect with the local community and riders, and get a true taste of the scene down in Australia.

In hindsight it feels like destiny but in the moment it was a happenstance meeting of a local rider named Liam Glas while sessioning the mini pipe one afternoon. His riding really stood out to Nico and I as you could clearly spot the surf influence in his style. We ended up going for a beer with him after the session and invited him out to film for a few more days on the hill. The son of a local legend surf shaper, Liam’s approach to the mountain was really surfy and it was a treat to watch the lines he would draw.

After a few days of filming on hill Liam invited us to come explore his beautiful hometown south of Sydney which ended up being the next chapter of our journey. We hung out at his dad/brothers shaping bay and had some great conversations around board building and the crossover in designs of snowboard and surfboards. Liam had even shaped a board whose rail line was directly influenced by a Korua Template. We spent a few days camping and surfing around the coast before heading north. The remainder of the trip we chased waves and road tripped another 500kms north up the coast.

Overall the trip ended up being everything we could have hoped for. A taste of somewhere new, and the chance to immerse ourselves in the local board riding culture. We’re really stoked on how the video came together and I think it brings back the ethos of the original Yearning for Turning videos. Loose plans, meeting new people on the road, and emphasizing the love of turning. Would love to thank the whole Glass family, Lincoln, Tom, and the whole crew over at Rhythm for making our trip so special.
