A decade ago, there was one destination banked slalom. Then the Dirksen Derby came along. The brainchild of Josh Dirksen, the even at Mount Bachelor bearing his namesake was born in the wake of an accident that left fellow snowboarder and Bend local Tyler Eklund paralyzed. The Derby was Josh’s effort to assist in the alleviation of the financial hardship following the tragedy. And it did.

It was also a reminder to the snowboarding world that Baker isn’t the only mountain on which a banked course can exist. The floodgates opened, and so did the starting gates. Similar events began to pop up around the country and the world. A simple format that uses berms to level the snowboarding playing field makes the banked slalom the great equalizer.

Where else can a kindergartener, a twenty-something pro and a 70-year-old compete on the same course? The diversity in the competition field fosters a type of community not seen at a slopestyle or halpipe contest. But like all contests, there are divisions. Despite their necessity for organization and the awarding of more prizes to more winners, all competitors raced on the same course — two courses to be precise — with the times on each course combined for a final ranking. But these rankings are done only by division. We took all rankings faster than 1:40 from each division and combined them into a single ordered list so you can see exactly how the competition field stacks up.

The term ‘professional snowboarder’ is becoming ever more arbitrary, but the Derby Elites category — with a $100 entry fee designed to be paid by riders’ sponsors and raise even more money for the cause — is primarily comprised of pros and close-to-pros. The top five times at the 2015 Dirksen Derby were all put down by riders in the Men’s Elite category, and the names near the top are not surprising. However, the overall results are more scattered between divisions than you might imagine.
