Ours is a culture that constantly pushes the limits. A hyper-connected, social-media obsessed world only amplifies that tendency. We laud the biggest tricks and glorify those who conquer the steepest lines, measuring such feats in likes and shares. It is an addicting cycle perpetuated by all participants, from the media to fans, riders and mega-sponsors. But in the midst of the glory, we often brush aside the mental and physical consequences. It is only when hanging from the precipice, then, that some stop and examine the costs of chasing perfection.

That’s why it was refreshing to read the candid words of Antti Autti. The Finnish snowboarder’s message is simple yet one we don’t hear often enough in this superhuman sphere. He describes feeling anxious, overwhelmed. With his words, Autti has carved out space for more honest discussion. Still, he admits, “it’s much easier for me to be on top of the sharp-edged mountain than talk about everyday feelings at home. After all, I’m from the Arctic Circle goddammit!”

Cheers to making time for warmth in the midst of our endless quest for cold.
