The brainchild of Josh Dirksen, the event bearing his namesake was born nine years ago in the wake of an accident that left fellow snowboarder and Bend local Tyler Eklund paralyzed. The Derby was Josh’s effort to assist in the alleviation of the financial hardship following the tragedy. And it did, and still does.

The 2015 Dirksen Derby took place on the weekend of December 11th through 13th while a couple feet of snow blanketed Mount Bachelor. This year’s event drew over 550 participants, raising tens of thousands of dollars for charity. The Derby is a true representation of the DIY spirit of snowboarding and an excellent way to kick off the season. If you didn’t make it this year, we’d recommend putting it on the calendar for next. In the meantime, enjoy this edit from RJ McNichols.
