Since 2002, the X Games have brought throngs of people eager to witness the latest in “extreme” sports to the mountains surrounding Aspen, Colorado. It’s a time when snowboarders around the world fixate on the likes of Shaun White, Ben Ferguson, or past contenders like Ross Powers or Danny Kass, to see how progression will be showcased under the scrutiny of halogen lights and television cameras. But when the show is over, after the Navy banners have been packed up and empty energy drink cans have been collected, what’s left is just snow.
Fast forward months into the summer, and that large, expensive pile of snow that enables 20+ foot airs and double corks is all but melted, barely recognizable for what it one was. The foundation remains, and with that the potential for riders to get back to the basics of the slide. Though not extreme, Forrest Bürki, Mark Pinter and Nick Becker show us how it all comes down to the simple idea of having fun on a snowboard.
